Our insight

East Africa & Indian Ocean cruising

East Africa is one of the world's top wildlife destinations, and even those animals we are more familiar with seem totally different in their natural habitat. It's a core Mundy philosophy, for instance, that the only way a giraffe can possibly make sense is if it's seen in the wild!

East Africa also serves as a natural gateway to the Indian Ocean, whose treasures include the Andaman Islands, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, the Seychelles, the Comoros, Mauritius and Madagascar. Some of these islands are visited by cruise ships just once or twice a year, if at all. So it is worth looking out for Indian Ocean cruises if you are looking for new and exotic destinations, especially if you have an interest in marine life and the fascinating history of the old spice routes. The snorkelling in the region is outstanding, and the indigenous birdlife in the Seychelles draws enthusiasts from around the world.

Some cruises also include the coast of the Indian sub-continent, with Mumbai as the turnaround port. Any visitor to Mumbai should take the time to explore Rajasthan while they are there - a Mundy speciality is creating memorable tours incorporating Agra and the Taj Mahal, Jaipur and Udaipur, by private car or even on a luxury train such as the Maharajas' Express.

East African itineraries are often 10- to 14-night Cape Town round-trip journeys before what is traditionally a repositioning sailing across the Indian Ocean, a longer voyage with relaxing days at sea interspersed with fascinating ports.

Our tips

Ways to make it better

Zebras in Kenya

Our tip

If you have never been to East Africa, take the opportunity to go on safari – it is the most magical experience, and you will be captivated both by the animals (you should see the big five) and the people, particularly the Masai.

Snorkelling in the Maldives

Our tip

99% of the Maldives is made up of sea, so if you don’t like the water, it’s probably not for you! If you do, an underwater paradise is at your fingertips.

Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens, Mauritius

Mauritius excursions

Explore Port Louis’s markets with a private guide, visit Fort Adelaide, the National Botanical garden and the Sugar Estate and museum.
