A penguin in Cape Town, one of the highlights of a South Africa cruise

South Africa cruises

South Africa is one of the world’s most beguiling destinations, from the top of Table Mountain to the sun-dappled savannahs of Kruger National Park. The ‘Rainbow Nation’ is perhaps best known for its wildlife, but it’s also home to vibrant cities, a fascinating colonial history and some world class wineries.

When to go

November to February

How to get there

Direct flight from the UK to Cape Town

Our insight

South Africa cruising

Embarkation in Cape Town is the perfect start to a West Africa cruise, including Namibia from Walvis Bay. Sometimes ships set course westwards from here en route for South America, or continue up the coast to Bom Bom Island, the Gambia, and the Cape Verde Islands.

Alternatively, ships leaving from Cape Town sail for the South African ports of Port Elizabeth, East London or Durban, all gateways for national parks and local culture. Cruises embarking or disembarking in Cape Town can be combined with a Garden Route tour, a trip on the Blue Train or Rovos Rail, a safari in Kruger National Park, or a visit to Victoria Falls and the Okavango Delta.

For British travellers, the non-stop flight to Cape Town, though long, is quite easy, as the hour change is minimal, meaning no jet lag. There are also a few cruises to South Africa from the UK or Mediterranean.

Our tips

Ways to make it better

Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Cape Town

Our tip

Combine time in Cape Town with trips outside the city. We will help you plan ahead to make the most of your visit, so our tip is simply to call us to make the most of it.

Robben Island lighthouse, Cape Town

Don't miss

Robben Island is a must, possibly the most well known island-prison in the world. Make sure you book ahead - the ferries leave at specific times and numbers are limited.

Cape Grace hotel, Cape Town

Where to stay in Cape Town

There are some great hotels to choose from, but at Mundy we especially like the Cape Grace on the waterfront.

Franschhoek, South Africa

Extend your stay in South Africa

Take a wine tour to Stellenbosch and Franschhoek for tastings, beautiful countryside and great food.

What our clients say

“We saw the Big Five plus many more. The highlight was on the last day, when we saw a cheetah with her four cubs less than eight feet away!”
