Mother of Pearl

Sustainability is the main pillar of Mother of Pearl, a brand that started in London but sees its collections parade in the Danish city. By the hands of Amy Powney, the timeless designs painted by a beige, white and black palette are born. Mother of Pearl knows that fashion has an environmental cost and therefore seeks to create collections with minimal impact but without ever compromising on aesthetics and style.

The Garment

The duo consisting of Sophia Roe and Charlotte Eskildsen made their debut at the Copenhagen Fashion Week with the brand The Garment. Started in 2020, this is the materialization of the search for a more sustainable wardrobe based on minimalism, since,  for the creators, “having less is buying in the right way”. On the second day of the event, the brand presented Garment The Movie to introduce minimalist classics that, for now, are only for sale in a Danish pop-up.

Lovechild 1979

The streets of cities that host fashion weeks are not only full of street style. For Lovechild 1979,  the historic center of Copenhagen was the stage for the parade. The rustic scene created around the catwalk only improved what was already waiting for us. Under the creative direction of Anne-Dorthe Larsen, the Danish brand combined feminine elegance and lightness with structured and oversized silhouettes, bringing to life pieces that are both timeless and suitable for the season.

By Malene Birger

With looks marked by simplicity, we come across the By Malene Birger brand, which claims to have an eclectic vision of Scandinavian minimalism. The collection presented in Copenhagen Fashion Week is close to the contemporary bohemian style, with oversized and fluid pieces. The long dresses are the signature piece of the collection designed by Maja Dixdotter, thus marking the combination of feminine traits with a sense of freedom.

Gestuz

It was in 2008 that Sanne Sehested started Gestuz , a brand that follows the Scandinavian design line while seeking to revolutionize the classics. And on the Copenhagen Fashion Week , this one stood out for its use of color, whether in the pieces or in the nature-inspired scenarios that served as the background for the show. With the contemporary woman in mind, it was with the power suits that Gestuz presented his proposals for the hot season of 2022.

Prosthetics Jewelry Collection by YVMIN

This article is originally from Vogue

The Story Behind the Collection of Prosthetics

Xiao Yang, a Chinese influencer and model, has been wearing a prosthetic leg for almost 20 years now. Despite the saying that nowadays she feels like it’s a part of her, it has not always been like that. It has a personal challenge and it was difficult to feel good with herself when it comes to dressing up., “In high school, when I was very eager to dress up, I thought that the prosthetic limbs affected my external beauty”, she tells Vogue.

“Wearing a prosthesis also caused one side of my buttocks to be deformed. I [still] feel unsafe if I wear tight pants or tops that are shorter than the buttocks—like [I’m] being exposed. I wore T-shirts and straight pants for a long time.”

Xiao Yang

But as time went on, Yang began experimenting more with her fashion choices and she began to find herself and wanting her prosthetic to reflect her sleek, modern style – yes, graphic t-shirts included-. But, earlier this year, she met Xiaoyu Zhang and Min Li, the creators of the brand YVMIN, and together they came up with an incredible idea: “What if we treat prosthetics like wearable art?”.
The YVMIN brand is known for creating delicate, feminine jewelry and this was the perfect opportunity for the creators to challenge themselves and to bring extra happiness to someone else through their work.

“When we saw Xiao sharing her OOTD photos on social media with her strong personal style, we thought it would be a good opportunity,”

YVMIN

Xiao was immediately on board with the idea because it meant her prosthetic would become a piece of art. And the best part? She could wear it, “This project tells everyone that wearing a prosthesis is a fact that cannot be changed—but wearing a prosthesis that looks gorgeous is also achievable (…) there will definitely be more people who need to experience it.” Now, this brand made it possible to use your prosthesis as an accessory and has already created three different decorative shells that can be worn over the prosthetic leg. Some of them have little details such as a heart-shaped “knee cap”.

To create these very special pieces, the designers had to take 3D scans of Yang’s prosthetic limbs and legs in order to make a structure that could easily fit over them. The shells are made of nylon and resin, “This lightweight material can ensure that the shell will not burden Xiao”, one of the designers says, “We used vacuum plating to give the resin and nylon materials a metallic luster (..) We also inlaid jewels, like purple zircon, on it.”

Their idea and collection has a success that conquered many fans online because it was more than just cool visual content and some users identified with this very special collaboration, “I myself wear a prosthesis, but I have never seen such beauty,” commented one user.

“We [hope this project] lets more people pay attention to the decorations that can be used for prosthetics. Prosthetic wearers can have their favorite accessories without replacing expensive prosthetics. We hope that our design and creation can give people more choices, no matter which group they belong to—this is our motivation for the future.”

Louis Vuitton Has Entered The (Gaming) Chat https://dailydesignews.com/louis-vuitton-has-entered-the-gaming-chat/ https://dailydesignews.com/louis-vuitton-has-entered-the-gaming-chat/#respond Wed, 18 Aug 2021 10:30:00 +0000 https://dailydesignews.com/?p=14050 Louis Vuitton launched an interactive gaming app that is available to download.

The seemingly disparate worlds of gaming and fashion are colliding, giving its rabid fans something more addicting than Candy Crush or scouring the internet for vintage Jean Paul Gaultier combined. Louis Vuitton launched an interactive gaming app that is available to download. “Louis the Game” pays homage to Louis Vuitton’s founder, who was born on August 4th, 1821 in Anchay in the French Jura, on his 200th birthday.

“Louis the Game” is a nod to the celebration. Following the atelier’s mascot Vivienne—whose shape takes after the LV’s iconic monogram symbols—you lead the character through a digital world to reach a birthday destination. The aim is to collect as many candles as you can while finding hidden keys that allow you to gain access to new levels. A global leaderboard lets you compete with your friends worldwide, and you can change skins to match your favorite Louis Vuitton bag, with prints pulled from the seaside Escale capsule and the limited-edition print from Louis Vuitton’s cruise 2021 Game On Coeur collection. Integrating the latest blockchain technology, the game also includes 30 NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens), 10 of which were created by digital artist Beeple.

As you walk, climb, float, and double jump through the LV world with Vivienne, you’re also receiving a lesson in Fashion 101. Each of the 200 candles unlocks a postcard that details an anecdote or trivia point about Louis Vuitton, ranging from its brand history to special collaborations to runway highlights.

Louis Vuitton’s connection to the futuristic world of gaming is not new. Creative director Nicholas Ghesquiere is a known fan of the digital aesthetic, with a penchant for space-inspired collections and a 2016 campaign starring Lightning, a heroine from the Final Fantasy franchise. Creating an actual video game is a natural extension for Louis Vuitton, bridging its steep heritage with modern-day pursuits.

Quirky Styling Tricks To Make The Most Of Your Summer Wardrobe https://dailydesignews.com/quirky-styling-tricks-to-make-the-most-of-your-summer-wardrobe/ https://dailydesignews.com/quirky-styling-tricks-to-make-the-most-of-your-summer-wardrobe/#respond Tue, 27 Jul 2021 11:31:00 +0000 https://dailydesignews.com/?p=13469 Now is an ideal time to take a long hard look at your clothes and create the perfect summer capsule wardrobe.

A heavy-duty wardrobe clear-out is in order. The three “re” affixes – re-home, repurpose and rekindle – are a solid place to start when it comes to curating your new summer capsule. While the first two speak for themselves, rekindle is perhaps the most delightful method of all. Rekindle your love affair with the items that make you feel your best, and rediscover those that you may have – god forbid – forgotten.

Comfort and ease are the other features to bear in mind when seeking your seasonal staples; breezy shorts; floaty, throw-on dresses; and no-fuss sandals are essentials. Here, nine styling tricks to employ now.

Buy a breezy short-sleeved shirt

No capsule is complete without a breezy shirt. Short-sleeved styles are a transeasonal mainstay, suitable for wear beyond the summer season.

Effekt Footwear launches trainer made from recycled materials https://dailydesignews.com/effekt-footwear-launches-trainer-made-from-recycled-materials/ https://dailydesignews.com/effekt-footwear-launches-trainer-made-from-recycled-materials/#respond Tue, 13 Jul 2021 11:53:00 +0000 https://dailydesignews.com/?p=12971 Vienna-based footwear startup Effekt Footwear has made a trainer from recycled materials, including ocean plastic.

Each pair of trainers is made with an average of 775 grams of recycled textile waste, reclaimed rubber and recovered ocean plastic, according to the brand.

A pair of black Alchemy-X trainers

“We wanted to make a sneaker that set the bar for sustainability and would create a positive impact for the planet,” said Effekt Footwear founder Ben Smits.

The trainer is named after the medieval practice of attempting to turn scrap metal into gold.

“Just as the medieval chemist was trying to turn base metals into gold, we’re using ‘21st-century alchemy‘ to turn trash into trainers,” said Smits.

“We wish to create value from cleaning up our planet, create a business case for upcycling and help re-frame people’s perception of waste materials.”

A pair of black trainers with a brown rubber sole

Effekt Footwear’s low rise trainer comes in a paired-back design featuring a recycled upper lining made out of reclaimed ocean plastic and recycled textiles.

Textile scraps, off cuts and other scrap materials from the Portuguese textile industry, are recovered before being sent to landfill. Materials such as cotton are then broken down and spun back into new yarn for the trainers.

An aerial view of a clothing land fill site

The company’s European supplier gathers material from a number of sources including fisherman and beach clean-up initiatives along the Mediterranean Sea.

Plastic from the ocean floor, floating on the ocean surface as well as from rivers, estuaries and aquatic environments that lead to the ocean is collected to make the shoes.

[BDCK category=3 Keywords=”CE-CAFFE LATTE NEW”][/BDCK]

The material is then coloured with ecological dyes and finished by hand in a family-owned workshop in Portugal.

The sole is comprised of at least 70 per cent rubber waste that was destined to end up in landfill. A small percentage of it is made from new rubber to ensure the soles are durable and long-lasting. Organic cotton in the stitching, embroidery and woven tag is the only other new material used.

A pair of trainers with the phrase "Every step cleans the planet" written inside

According to Smits, the result is “a sneaker that contains 90 per cent recycled material and can be easily recycled at its end of life.”

While the entire insole is biodegradable, the rest of the shoe is “designed for easy recycling with suppliers”. Customers can participate in the Effekt Collekt program whereby their trainers will be taken back and recycled by Effekt after wear.
