In the case of Dior’s Medallion Chair, the boundaries between fashion and design are famously porous. Installed at Palazzo Citterio, Dior presented the seventeen reinterpretations at the return of Salone del Mobile in Milan.

Christian Dior describes the Louis XVI chair in his memoirs as “sober, simple, but above all classic and Parisian.” Tapered with an oval back, the story began with the collaboration of the stylist-tailor with Victor Grandpierre, first a photographer and then a decorator. The famous duo produced the famous grey and white interiors that have become synonymous with Dior. The same oval, crowned by a Fontanges bow, was displayed on the Dior packaging, communication, and in the boutiques. Used at fashion shows, medallion chairs became silent spectators to a beautiful Parisian world.

BOCA DO LOBO WILL BE PRESENT AT SUPERSALONE 2021 | MEET US AT HALL 1 – C04

Tom Dixon and his team are planning a grand tour that will see the designer bounce across eight European cities to present his latest designs. Making its first stop in Milan during Supersalone 2021, Dixon’s presentation focuses on the theme of light, with a showcase titled ‘Luminosity’ exploring ‘how optics and light can improve your space’.

Cristina Celestino‘s new work for Billiani includes her first textile for the Italian chairmaker called Timent.

Hermès’s latest collection explores texture with bold, organic furniture by Studio Mumbai, enamelled copper centrepieces and a playful tea service titled Hippomobile. Italian artist Gianpaolo Pagni took inspiration from the patterns of jockey silks and equine engravings in the Émile Hermès collection for these mix-and-match designs.

Lighting designers Cristiana Giopato and Christopher Coombes are always a highlight on the Milan circuit. For 2021, the pair explore the outer reaches of sculptural illumination with Fragments of Infinity, an installation of new work inspired by space and the balance between light and matter—as cleverly articulated in the Milky Way floor-to-ceiling column.

Moroso has collaborated with French-Lebanese architect Annabel Karim Kassar to produce a series of side tables and a modular seating system. The collection, titled Salon Nanà is inspired by Morocco where Kassar lived for three years.

London-based Bethan Laura Wood’s solo show for Nilufar Gallery, titled Ornate celebrates a decade of dialogue between Wood and leading Milanese gallerist, Nina Yashar. New works based on the theme of the boudoir span lighting, cabinets, mirrors, a desk and a bedhead aim to blur the boundaries between 2D decoration and 3D form.

New to the Gucci Décor 2021 collection, which champions all things made in Italy, is coloured porcelain tableware created in partnership with the renowned Florentine company, Ginori 1735. The collection also features new cutlery, candles, wallpaper, soft furnishings—cushions, blankets and quilts—and furniture. A pop-up store in Milan during Salone opened the past September 5. Armani’s limited-edition handcrafted Royal bar cabinet showcases subtle Japanese sensibility. A tatami-inspired woven exterior encapsulates back-lit golden panelling inside, embellished with a shimmering marble-like motif.

The Hôtel de la Marine was designed in 1758 by Ange-Jacques Gabriel, the chief architect to King Louis XV. This luxury place has 250 years of history providing a dazzling view into the decorative arts of 18th-century France. During the French Revolution until 2015 this was the headquarters of France’s navy ministry. And in 2021, this place shelters an incredible design museum.

With an amazing collection of pieces, the new design museum includes a sofa that was made originally for Marie Antoinette! The Hôtel de la Marine is an architectural gem in the heart of Paris, with an incredible view on the Place de la Concorde from its loggia. This monument was the first museum in Paris. Representative of the French art de vivre, it was essential to preserve it for future generations in order to account for the technical know-how of France: stone cutting, gilding, trimmings, carpentry and cabinetry, chandeliers, sculptures and paintings.

In 2015, following the navy’s departure, the space was assigned to Centre des Monuments Nationaux, whose mission was to conserve, restore, and maintain approximately 100 national monuments, including the famed Arc de Triomphe, Villa Kérylos in the French Riviera, and Sainte Chapelle, among others. Two years later, a massive renovation began, starting with the architecturally significant façade before moving into the courtyards and apartments, and now a great design museum is born.

The architecture of the Parisian design museum is jaw-dropping all alone, but it’s not the only outstanding aspect! Filled with a number of treasures, such as, a vase-clock with dolphin handles in soft-paste porcelain, a sofa made for Marie-Antoinette by Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené, a cylinder desk by Riesener ordered in 1784 by Thierry de Ville-d’Avray, and a sideboard by the same Riesener, ordered by Thierry de Ville-d’Avray and which was held at the Élysée Palace. Created in Allen’s studio in Mexico, these sculptures are his latest works, and at a glance, they might seem living creatures, as they are imbued with organic, surreal, and creature-like characteristics.

The sculptures can be found both inside and outdoors at Kasming gallery in New York. Visible to all who pass on New York City’s popular pedestrian road, High Line, the artworks evoke curiosity about the life of objects and the ways form and material can transform the utility of language.

Kamin Gallery represents the American artist since 2019, and ever since the director, Nick Olney and Allen have been planning this art exhibition. Allen’s connection with nature arises from a childhood spent in Utah, where closeness to the desert allowed him the chance to roam, whittle wood, and hand-carve stones that he stumbled upon.

The artist started his career by hand-sculpting intimately scaled model clay or wax forms, and he works on these sculptures until each one has a life of its own. In this art exhibition, small-scale meets monumental, exhibiting the versatility and ambition of Allen’s work. The forms and shape of the sculptures only tell half of the story. The choice of different finishes includes welding smaller pieces together, brazing, polishing, and developing chemical patinas until surfaces almost resemble paintings, or even rippling landscapes.

I like to capture things in between, that they are still progressing beyond the moment I make them, I’m interested in that split second. They are a moment in the life of something rather than a symbol for something, they are more a symbol for an idea or feeling.

Demand for biomaterials such as mycelium, hemp, algae, bamboo and cork is growing, Wurm said, as architects search for materials that store atmospheric carbon rather than emitting it.

“It’s a really exciting space,” Wurm told. There are a lot of startups and a lot of grants. There’s a lot of things happening.”

Demand is being fuelled by the realisation that around half of the total carbon emitted by a building is caused before it even opens.

“The big driver is the focus on whole-life carbon,” Wurm said. “The focus has shifted from making buildings energy-efficient to looking at carbon.”

The built environment is responsible for an estimated 40 per cent of all greenhouse gas emissions but construction’s role has been overlooked until recently, Wurm said.

“For a long time, the construction industry was not a sector being addressed when we talked about climate change,” he said, pointing out that November’s COP26 climate conference will have a dedicated built-environment day for the first time.

In addition, the European Commission this week announced proposals that would limit emissions from buildings for the first time.

“So it’s now part of the overall discussion on climate change,” Wurm said.

Wurm leads the European research and innovation team at Arup, the global architecture and engineering group that is headquartered in London.

He has worked on pioneering biomaterial projects including a 2013 project that used algae to generate electricity and the 2014 Hy-Fi project at MoMA PS1 in New York, where he collaborated with Evocative Design to develop the mycelium bricks used to build a temporary tower designed by design studio The Living.

More recently, he has collaborated with Italian biodesign firm Mogu to create a range of acoustic wall panels made of mycelium, which is the underground part of fungus. It feeds on waste biomass such as sawdust, absorbing carbon as it grows. It is increasingly being used for packaging, insulation and products.

Mogu produces a variety of biobased materials including mycelium acoustic panels and flooring products from bioresins and agricultural waste. The new system developed with Arup, called Foresta, was unveiled this week.

The Foresta product joins a growing range of experimental biomaterials being used in construction projects. Materials research lab Atelier Luma has added interior finishes made of algae, sunflowers and salt to The Tower, a building by Frank Gehry at Luma Foundation in Arles, France.

Practice Architecture worked with hemp farmer Steve Barron to build Flat House, a home in Cambridgeshire, England, that features insulation and external cladding made of the cannabis variety.

Matthew Barnett Howland, Dido Milne and Oliver Wilton used cork blocks to build Cork House in Berkshire, England, which was shortlisted for the Stirling Prize.

Bioplastic brand Made of Air has clad a car dealership in Germany with panels made from farm waste mixed with bioresin.

Wurm said these experimental materials are now going mainstream and architects consider using them on major projects.

“Focus is shifting to embodied carbon,” Wurm said. “Roughly over the whole life of a building, carbon emissions are 50 per cent embodied and 50 per cent operational.”

The drive to create net-zero buildings that create no emissions over their entire lifecycle means that architects need to reduce embodied carbon, which includes all emissions generated by the manufacture of materials as well as the construction process itself.

Embodied carbon represents roughly half the carbon footprint of a building while operational carbon, which are emissions caused by the building in use, makes up the other half.

It’s much harder to tackle embodied carbon. Bringing these emissions down to zero is “impossible,” according to Hélène Chartier, head of zero-carbon development at international network C40 Cities.

Chartier, who is coordinating C40 Cities’ international competition to develop zero-carbon neighbourhoods, told that architects should reduce embodied emissions as far as they can and then look for ways of offsetting the remainder.

Biomaterials that sequester carbon via photosynthesis offer an obvious way of reducing the upfront carbon footprint of a building. Timber is the most popular biobased material but “timber takes 100 years to grow,” Wurm said.

“So all the carbon we’re storing has been built up over 100 years,” when using timber, Wurm explained. “And we take down trees, which absorb quite a lot of carbon. Of course, we replant trees.”

“But I think it’s interesting to take the pressure away from forests and see what other materials we can use to capture carbon in a shorter time.”

Airweave has created 18,000 beds and mattresses for athletes at this summer‘s Olympics, 8,000 of which will be repurposed for use by athletes at the Paralympics.

The bed frames are made from recycled cardboard, while the modular mattresses are made from polyethylene fibres that the brand says can be recycled an unlimited number of times.

The sleeping equipment had to align with the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games‘ sustainability plan, which aims to deliver a more sustainable event and showcase innovative concepts and solutions that will have a legacy after the Games.

“The concept was to make a lightweight, easy-to-assemble mattress and meet the Games’ Sustainability Plan,” Airweave told.

The bed frames, which are made out of recycled cardboard, will first be supplied to Olympic athletes. Following the Olympics, 8,000 of the bed frames will be reused by Paralympic athletes. After both Games, the beds will avoid landfill by being donated to national organisations.

The beds have been designed to be extremely light and easy to assemble in order to ensure transferring the beds between locations is quick and efficient.

The cardboard bedframes will support a version of Airweave‘s modular mattress, which the brand designed to accommodate the wide variety of body types of different athletes.

The mattress is composed of three separate blocks made from springy polyethylene fibres – one to support the head and shoulders, one to support the waist and one to support the legs – which are zipped together in a case.

The modules can be ordered in four different firmness levels and can provide a different level of firmness on each side. This allows athletes to customise their mattresses by changing the order of the three blocks and flipping them over one way or the other.

“Our signature modular mattress design allows for firmness customizations at the shoulder, waist and legs to achieve proper spine alignment and sleep posture, allowing for the highest level of personalization for each athlete’s unique body type,” Airweave said.

The mattresses can be further customised with additional layers, such as a pillow top to increase the softness.

In the Olympic Village, athletes will be able to go to a mattress fitting centre where they can get help with mattress configuration.

The brand also developed an app to help athletes find the best mattress for their bodies. Users can submit photos and input their body measurements into the app to get a recommended mattress configuration.

As the Olympic’s official bedding partner, Airweave will also provide pillows and duvets to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic athlete villages.

Cardboard beds are not the only new addition to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The Games will see robots by Toyota deployed across the site to assist workers and attendees. Toyota has also adapted a fleet of its autonomous and electric e-Palette vehicles to serve athletes.
