The use of local materials, including sandstone blocks from the nearby quarry in Santanyi, helped to create a building that blends naturally with its surroundings. The large windows on all three sides of the main living area were designed to break down the boundaries between the outside and the inside, allowing unobstructed views to the outside.

Known as experts in collectable design, Evan Snyderman and Zesty Meyers, the creators of the firm, are passionate by arts and crafts. The artists started their careers as makers themselves, since they were glass artists, creating their own sculptural worksR & Company’s art exhibition takes place on all three floors of the gallery’s White Street, and it’s on view until the end of July.

Evan Snyderman and Zesty Meyers, founders of the New York Gallery R & COMPANY

The primary starting point for this art exhibition was the belief in the power of skilled handwork, especially when joined with strong conceptual ideas and an awareness of history. This idea has also been a mission statement for R & Company, since they founded the gallery, back in 1997.

The show has been in the making for several years, and it was imagined as a continuation to the monument exhibition “Objects: USA”, which debuted in October 1969 at the Smithsonian’s National Collection of Fine Art, in Washington, D.C., and starred 250 artists from across the country working in different crafts. The show was organized by enterprising Lee Nordness and Paul J. Smith, director of the Museum of Contemporary Crafts (now the Museum of Arts & Design). The goal with “Objects: USA 2020” is to highlight different artists, and techniques, from ceramists, woodworkers, glassmakers, metalworkers, jewellery designers, and textile artists.

Design Show by R & Company Gets Together Works From 100 Makers

The design show has visited more than 22 museums in the U.S and another 11 in Europe, and modern than half a million people had seen it! This gave American craft artists a twist in their careers. Now, the founders of the R & Company present a chance in the original concept, pairing roughly 50 artists from the 1969 exhibition — among them Anni Albers, J.B. Blunk, Sheila Hicks, Sam Maloof, Peter Voulko, and Wendell Castle, with the same number of rising practitioners working today.

The selection of contemporary artists and designers needed to be diverse in both gender and race, and capture a broad view of what is happening inside makers’ studios in America, to capture a broad view of what is happening inside makers’ studios in America.

EVAN SNYDERMAN

Among the artists featured in this design show are also some of the 21at century stars, such as Fogan Gregory, Katie Stout, the Haas Brothers, and so on! Besides, R & Company has borrowed works from 17 other galleries as well as private collections and foundations, in order to represent more contemporary makers as possible.

Except for 10% of the works featured in the show, and with another 10% maintained for purchase by museums only, everything is available for sale. The contemporary pieces are from the past few years, while the most older works are mostly from the period of the original exhibition, dating to the early 1960s and mid-’70s.

Design Show by R & Company Gets Together Works From 100 Makers

In one setting, a cloud-like light fixture of azure-tinted glass disks made last year by Jeff Zimmerman hangs above a Tongue-Shaped Wendell Castle Table, and a walnut wine rack with sensual Surrealist curves by Art Carpenter, both from the late ’60s. Another mesmerizing setting features a textile hanging from Liz Collins, paired with an abstract expressionist painting, that serves as a background for a classic 1966 George Nakashima’s bench and Jiha Moon’s ceramic vessels.

Since 1969, the concept and passion for crafts and the will to express themselves with these techniques, has never changed for R & Company and that’s why they created this design show!

Of course, this year’s event looks a bit different, is necessarily smaller, ranging from 200 exhibitors in 2019 to just 64. Also, Frieze New York, 2021 takes place for the first time in a sleek new Manhattan location, at The Shed, the culture and performing arts center designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in Hudson Yards, compared to the usual expedition to Randall’s Island.

The Best Of The First Live Art Fair Frieze New York 2021 (3)

The fair started by following health and safety protocols, visitors were required to present a negative COVID-19 test or vaccine proof in order to gain strictly timed entry. When it comes to the artists, the representation is mostly American, there are some international exhibitors are taking part, from Brazil, London, and Buenos Aires, and Daily Design News is going to taking you on a journey through the best of Frieze New York!

Douglas Rieger at Helena Anrather and Capsule Shanghai

The joint presentation by New York gallery Helena Anrather and Capsule Shanghai was one of the standouts at the Frame Section. Showcasing new work, recent sculptures, and mixed media by the emerging Pittsburgh artist Douglas Rieger. The anthropomorphic sculptures are crafted with a lot of precision, with wood, silicone, steel, and vinyl, to reveal opposing sensations of soft and hard, rough and smooth.

Ewa Juszkiewicz and Rachel Feinstein, Gagosian

Gagosian opted to dedicate its large space to a pair of female artists that subvert and challenge the male-dominated realm of art history in their practices: the Polish painter Ewa Juszkiewicz, and the sculptor Rachel Feinstein, known for her darkly humorous aesthetic. Feinstein in her artworks represents a group of large-scale majolica sculptures, inspired by Franz Anton Bustelli’s Rococo commedia dell’arte figurines, while Ewa’s paintings reimagine well-known 18th- and 19th-century masterpieces depicting fashionably dressed women, disturbing the veneer by concealing their faces with wrapped fabric or elaborate hairstyles.

Annette Messager, Marian Goodman Gallery

Marian Goodman Gallery brought to Frieze New York a museum-quality solo presentation of artwork by renowned French contemporary artist Annette Messager that floats between the playful and the macabre! In a standalone room, Petite Babylone, 2019, is made up of dozens of black abstract shapes and stuffed animals grouped on the floor. A slow-moving light display creates a ballet of shadows, adding a haunting sensation. Hanging on the wall with black string, five drawings are interspersed between 42 of her signature effigy sculptures. A series of watercolor drawings round out the impressive booth.

Mendes Wood

With its mix of stabilized and emerging Brazilian artists, including a superb new Marina Perez Simão seascape painting that sold on the fair’s first day, Mendes Wood, a cutting-edge gallery that maintains outposts in São Paulo and New York, celebrated Brazilian creativity at Friezes New York! Between the other highlights is a wall sculpture by Sonia Gomes, who beautifully combines secondhand textiles with everyday materials!

Stephen Friedman Gallery

Mesmerizing paintings portraying nonbinary people by Cornwall artist Sarah Ball are some of the greatest highlights at the London-based Stephen Friedman Gallery! Loaded with emotion and deep sensitivity, the hauntingly beautiful faces gaze straight out of the frame at the viewer and firmly hold their attention.

Galeria Nara Roesler

Galeria Nara Roesler, which just opened its first gallery location in New York’s Chelsea gallery, offers a carefully curated group of three influential Brazilian artists, and each one explores the notion of self. Carlito Carvalhosa takes the central focus, with vibrant colorful works on mirrors form an interesting dialogue with Cristina Canale’s gestural portraits. Sculptures made of perforated sound stone sitting atop concrete columns by the artist Amelia Toledo surrounded these artworks. Toledo combines the history of concrete art in Brazil with a personal fascination with nature.

For those who hadn’t have the chance to visit Frieze New York, a dedicated edition of Frieze Viewing Room will run parallel to the fair, through May 14, and will feature an expanded list of over 160 exhibitors!

The designer has created beautifully textured interiors for projects as varied as an Upper East Side pre-war apartment, a modern beach house in Bellport, and a family home in Beverlly Hills. Her distinctive style combines bright whites, warm neutrals, and subtle decorative elements for an effect that’s elegant without being formal and restrained without being anywhere near cold. Her rooms make you feel calm – like you could sit there for hours with a cocktail in one hand and a fabulous book in in the other, and Daily Design News wants you to know all about it!

Alyssa Kapito Interiors: Classic, Edited, Artful

Alyssa Kapito is known for her interiors’ clean lines and neutral palettes – but do not call her a minimalist. Instead, the New York City-based designer considers hear aesthetic a “minimalist take on traditionalism, in which editing is key to keep homes feeling fresh.” The Long Island-born Alyssa Kapito came from an art history background, however, since opening her eponymous firm in 2012, she has proven her natural gift lien in interior design. Just ask the 135,000 followers of her Instagram account, which was also praised by British Vogue and Elle Decor. Illustrating her two artistic pursuits, Alyssa Kapito selected her favourite pieces from Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Online auction (22 February – 7 March) and spoke to us about creating spaces featuring a cleansing palette that is far from plain.

“I love living rooms because you can break out of the box a little. In a bedroom you always need a bed, a dining room you always need a dining table and a kitchen has to be practical. A living room, on the ther hand, can really be however you want it to be. I have a daybed in the middle of my living room and I love it!” Said Alyssa Kapito, when asked about her favourite room of the house.
